During Latics’ hectic summer transfer window there weren’t many players more heavily linked with a move to the DW than Jamie McGrath. The 25 year old has stared since joining St Mirren in 2020, and his performances have earnt him a call up to the Republic of Ireland national team, where he’s played alongside Tics favourite James McClean.

McGrath is a cultured attacking midfielder with an eye for goal, having netted 12 times in 59 games in the Cinch Scottish Premiership. So far this season he has registered .18 goal contributions per 90 minutes in a side struggling towards the bottom of the league. He has also attempted 4.6 crosses per 90, and drawn 2.46 fouls per 90 which bodes well for our success from set pieces this season.

St Mirren are believed to be holding out for a fee north of £250,000 for McGrath, who’s contract expires in June this year. Wigan face competition from Birmingham and Middlesbrough in their bid to convince McGrath to move south of the border, but it is believed he is more than willing to do so.

So would Jamie McGrath be a good signing for Leam Richardson’s side? The short answer is yes he would. With fixtures coming thick and fast, and Jordan Jones’ future at the DW looking more and more bleak the Latics would benefit greatly if they are able to secure McGrath’s services. His already impressive attacking numbers would likely improve when playing in a side towards the top of the league, and with McGrath approaching the prime years of his career the move could work out well for all parties.
